Johann Garcaeus

Tertius tractatus de usi globi astriferi collectus studio Iohannis Garcaei Iunioris, Vitebergae 1565

Le due tavole dei planisferi celesti, che misurano circa 26,1 per 26,6 cm , sono contenute nel terzo dei tre trattati che l’autore ha dedicato all’astronomia. Sono molto rare e quasi sempre mancanti nelle copie depositate nelle biblioteche nazionali. Quelle che propongo sono state messe in vendita da Sotheby’s nel 2012 ed erano allegate al terzo dei tre trattati rilegato però insieme agli altri due in un unico volume:

Sono riprodotte in proiezione polare eclittica in visione concava, partono dal polo  fino all’eclittica sulla quale è posta una scala graduata al passo di un grado di longitudine, le costellazioni zodiacali sono rappresentate in entrambi i planisferi. Il reticolo eclittico è completato da linee di longitudine ogni 30°, quello equatoriale comprende i poli, i due circoli dei tropici, i due circoli artico e antartico e la  proiezione dell’equatore ripartita per competenza nei due planisferi. In quello boreale sono anche presenti le due costellazioni non tolemaiche di Caput Medusae e Comae Berenices, questa rappresentata da un fascio di arbusti. Lo stile di riferimento è quello delle tavole del Dürer del 1515 filtrate da quelle successive di Honter.

Die Sternkarten von Johann Garcaeus von 1565 aus Wittenberg

Der lutherische Theologe Johann Garcaeus (1530-1574) brachte 1565 in Wittenberg eine Anleitung zum Gebrauch der Himmelsgloben heraus, denen Himmelskarten beigebunden waren, die denen von Amman vom Vorjahr nachempfunden waren, nur dass er die Figuren wieder so zeigte, wie wir sie am Himmel sehen. Gewidmet waren diese Karten Adam Gefugius von Vellendorph, der häufig fälschlicherweise als Autor genannt wird [Sotheby's].
